Lenovo Ideapad U110 - Top Ultraportable

The ultra-portable market is for the discerning few who are looking for great portability in a laptop. These are typically road warriors who spend half their lives in an airport or in the air. This is someone who needs to deliver a few powerpoint presentations a week. Or take the case of the corporate guy who really is bothered by the small screen on a blackberry and needs something bigger to read and respond to emails.

The Lenovo U110 is yet another superb piece of hardware delivered by the successors to the IBM genre. At just 2.4 lbs, its probably only as heavy than a bottle of fine wine.

Here is our review of a U110 from the Lenovo Direct store.

Technical specifications can be dull and boring - usability factors are what determine how you can use this laptop in the real world.

The Screen: The screen is 11.1 inches. This is a typical screen size for ultraportables. But screensize is what gives the laptop the bulk of its weight. Hence smaller screen size = lower weight.

The screen surface on the U110 is highly glazed, reflective screen that enhances the viewing experience in normal working light. "Frameless Screen" is what Lenovo calls the totally flat screen without any protruding edges. The screen is delightful to use under normal working conditions. If you get a glare you can always tilt the screen a bit. The screen supports a resolution of upto 1,366x768.

If you do not like the glossy finish U110, you can go for the Ideapad U330, which comes with a non-glossy finish.

The Keyboard: The keyboard has a fresh look and feel - deviating from the 'traditional' IBM thinkpad keyboard - the only difference is the higly polished smooth surface of the keys. The keyboard appears as on contiguous, flat surface - lets face it, some people will love this keyboard and some won't.

Colors : First in an ultraportable thep U110 is available in Black or Red.

Optical Drive: If you are moving up from a laptop to an ultraportable, the first thing you will notice on the U110 is the lack of an optical drive. The Lenovo Ideapad U110 does not come with a built-in optical drive (neither does the macbook air). But you can always add a detachable drive if you need one.

This keeps the portability high. You can always take the external CD/DVD drive with you.

Processor: Intel Core2 Duo 7500 with an Intel 965GM chipset.

Hard Drive: The hard drive is a 120GB hard drive at 4200 rpm. This could have been faster in our opinion.

Weight: Our favorite dimension on the U110. It weighs a measly 2.4 lbs with the standard battery. Even the battery charger is uniquely compact. In fact this is one of the most comapct battery charger that we have run across.

Battery Life: The U110 comes with 2 separate batteries. The lighter, 4 cell battery can last upto 2 hours. The bulkier 7 cell battery can last upto 4 hours. Since Lenovo ships both the regular and the long life batteries, you can carry the regular battery as a spare.

Multimedia: An integrated camera lets you broadcast your handsome/pretty face to whoever you please!. The multimedia buttons are located on top of the keypad.

A beautifully embellished design weaves around the multimedia controls.
